Definitions:
What is Stuttering or Disfluencies? A fluency disorder is an interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and disfluencies (e.g., repetitions of sounds, syllables, words, and phrases; sound prolongations; and blocks), which may also be accompanied by excessive tension, speaking avoidance, struggle behaviors, and secondary mannerisms (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 1993). Please note that Stuttering is not just what you hear or see someone do.
Types of Stuttering -
a. Part-Word Repetitions - Repeating of sounds in a word (ex. I wa-wa-wa-want to go.)
b. Prolongations - Prolonging a sound in a word (ex. I wwwwwant to go.)
c. Block - Articulators are in place to say a sound and nothing comes out. The person feels stuck or blocked. (ex. I w----ant to go.)
